Homemade Yogurt
Mix 5 cups of water and 2 cups of nonfat dry milk.
Microwave about 10 minutes
Cool about 30 minutes
Take temperature
Add starter (She bought a box of Yogourmet yogurt starter from Wild Oats.) She used this for her first batch. Since then, has used a spoonful of her previous batches of yogurt.
Pour into yogurt cups
"Cook" for 11 hours
Refrigerate
Mix in a spoonful of homemade jam and frozen berries (you can buy big frozen bags at Costco) You could try it with honey or maple syrup etc. and even top it with granola for a special treat.
If you haven't ever tasted natural yogurt before, be forewarned that it tastes way different than Yoplait and other store brands. It isn't sweet at all until you add some sweeteners. It is pretty tart.

Homemade Yogurt
Okay. Take 2qts of milk (I always use whole milk because it is too, too delicious) and put them in your crockpot. I bought a 2qt crockpot for the purpose but you can do it in a bigger one if that's what you have.
Heat on high, covered, for 3 hours or until almost boiling.
Turn off and uncover for 1 hour or until the milk is quite warm, but not hot, too the touch (like bathwater).
Stir in a small carton single serving of PLAIN COMMERCIAL YOGURT. Stir it really, really, really good.
Cover and let sit in an area without drafts -- in your (unused) oven, a cupboard that won't be opened, a picnic chest (we call them "Esky's" but I forget what they are called here LOL), one of those big insulated picnic bags, whatever. Your objective is to keep it warm and draft free, but you don't want to add heat to it. You can wrap a towel around it if you like to be extra sure to keep it from drafts.
Let sit for about 8 hours.
Check it at 8 hours, if it's still runny let it sit a bit more; if it has a lot of clear liquid on it you probably let it sit a bit too long. But 8 hours usually works great for me.
Okay, now for a real treat. Get some strawberries and some brown sugar and your yogurt. And a really, really big bowl. Trust me. Serve up your strawberries with some big dollops of yogurt and sprinkle it generously with brown sugar. Eat. Repeat.
